Welcome to Mrs. Wilkes's Kindergarten Site
I Can Begin to Talk About the People in My Community!
This learning started off with a reading of Franklin’s Neighbourhood. After reading the book a few times throughout the week, students started to retell the story based on the pictures. Their re-telling included descriptive language, dialogue and sequenced events. Learning about our community would be meaningless if we didn’t involve the people in our community: YOU! Students are introducing the people in our community through Show and Share. This week, students discussed the roles of firefighters, people at the Children’s Hospital, volunteers who promote the protection of our provincial parks and families who grow gardens and flowers to help their families, animals and insects. This learning is being documented on a large bulletin board in our class. As each student shares, we will add more and more information to our community map bulletin board! Throughout the upcoming weeks, you can support your child by having conversations about how your family is part of a community. When walking through the neighbourhood, point out how people work and play together to live cooperatively. This can include people’s jobs and roles, volunteers, and children: we all have an important part to play! You can click on the image of our story to watch it on YouTube. |
I Can Subitize (recognize how many there are without counting)
Students reviewed a game they learned last week (Find It!). However, we added a rule that changed the game: if you roll a number that your opponent already has a marker on, you can ‘bump them’ and replace their marker with your own! During this game, we heard students use rehearsed social phrases like, “on man! good move”, or “nice try!”, “Thanks for playing with me”, etc. You can support your child’s learning by playing this game with them at home. You can click here to download and print the game. Some ideas of household items you can use at home as game chips/markers: 2 types of cereal or pastas, 2 colours of Lego pieces (just make sure they are small enough to fit on the board), or pinecones vs rocks! |
Throughout this week, we continued to read stories about characters who demonstrated bravery, but this week we focused on the resulting feelings: those of joy, happiness and pride. When we are brave to try something new, we learn and grow! This is why the teaching of bravery and the bear belong in the white part of the medicine wheel that represents our mind. Click on the images of the stories to hear them.
